THE PIKME-UP Between 1987 and 1993, the PikMe-Up Cafe on Sixth and La Brea played host to a mini-generation of poets, artists, musicians and glorious weirdos, offering java (NO free refills!) along with shows, art on the walls, and a stream of scenesters and befuddled out-of-towners. Archival footage forms the bulk of this perhaps too inward-looking home-movie reminiscence — they filmed everything, it seems — alongside interviews with older, balder, plumper versions of the Cafe’s regulars, including folk singer Phranc, Exene Cervenka, John Fleck and even, briefly, Viggo Mortensen, looking very earnest indeed (or incredibly high). More interesting for those who were there than those who weren’t, one suspects, but possessed of a warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feel, nonetheless. (REDCAT; Sun., July 9, 8:30 p.m.)
